Opportunities for skilled but unqualified tradespeople to migrate to Australia
26/01/09

Are you an experienced tradesperson in the construction industry looking at migrating to Australia?

If you have at least 4 years work experience in one of the occupations listed below but do not have any relevant qualifications then the Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) route should be considered. There are three major RPL agencies in the UK and Ireland: Silver Trowel, Australian Construction Training Services (ACTS) and Australian Trade Assessments (ATA).

The RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) areas they currently cover are:

  • Roof Tiling
  • Wall & Floor Tiling
  • Painting & Decorating
  • Solid Plastering
  • Fibrous Plastering
  • Carpentry (Ireland)
  • Bricklaying (Ireland)

ATA also covers Hairdressing.

This means that applicants WITHOUT a formal qualification but 4 years or more proven work experience in one of the above occupations can now complete an RPL and a skills assessment to achieve an AQF level 3 qualification certification. This certification then in turn enables the applicant to be ultimately granted the qualification necessary points necessary to consider an application for skilled migration to Australia (formally these applicants were ineligible).
